Filippo
(Turning towards her)
What is that to me?
Beatrice
He rode through our street,
And gazed long at me.
Filippo
That is the way
Men look at pretty women.
What matters it to you?
Beatrice
Rosina stood by me.
Just think: No glance at her!
I really thought,
She would be ill from pain, for you must know
She lives him much, the Duke – she lives oth ers too,
To tell the truth, but the Duke so much
That this year, when he tarried on his journey,
She fell ill of longing, - and now he comes again
And sides right past us and looks at me only.
Filippo
You sill y child, does that move you so?
Beatrice
I say it not for that reason I had indeed, forgotten it.
But for my wondrous dream
Filippo
By day?
(Comes slowly down the steps)
Beatrice
It was so sultry. I went to my room,
To get away from Rosina's anger —
She had beaten me, she'd done that often,
And to get another dress - for thee
And other/shoes. I sat me on the bed
Wishing to tie the ribbons, you see,
And fell asleep anddenmed most strangely..
