— ACT IV —:—
scöne:
Large hall in castle. Back open leading
to a garden. Two row s of four columns each,
close the covered room so that three pas¬
sages are led toward the garden. R. and L.
doors. R. also a window, which is supposed
to look down into a court far below. On
both sides of the passages between the Hlumns
open steps which lead up in a winding way
to the terrace, which though naturally un-
seen by the audience appears to be upon a
roof held up by the columns. The hall is
brilliently lighted; the garden lighted
with torches, which burn resrlessly, so that
over the great meadow in the back ground an
uncertain light is cast, and thebringing of
the tree, by which the meadow is encireled,
appear iniusiging sizes. For moments the
garden seems to disappear in darkness. Music
is heard in the distance. Over the sward
couples are seen to pass and disappear again.
There is a ready but [uncertain] movement in
the backward.
