You are quite right. And I am glad of this opportunity of know-
ing you better, of seeing you at your work as it were. It in-
terests me greatly for several reasons.
HALMSCHLAEGER
May I ask a question? Was it really something so important your
friend had to say to you?
WEIHGAST
Not in the least. We knew each other well--many years back and
he wanted to see me once more--that was all. But I think my
coming has quieted him.(He goes out throug curtain with Halmsch-
laeger, the nurse following them)
FLORIAN
(Hurries to Rademacher) Well what happened? That man must have
tremendous self-control. I understand something about faces--
but I didn't see anything in his. How did he take it?
RADEMACHER

(Pays no attention to him) How pitiable are they who still
u, live, tomorrow.
FLORIAN
Mr. Rademacher what happened? And how about the key to your desk?
RADEMACHER
(As if awakening) My desk? Oh do what you like with it--burn
it up if you want to.
FLORIAN
And the treasure in it? The masterpieces?
RADEMACHER
Masterpieces? And even if they were--there is no future except
for the living. (As if seeing a vision) Now he is down utairs--
he passes out of the door—goes out into the street-the lamps
