It must not be thought, however, that America were first
introduced to Schnitzler in 1911. As early as February 16, 1899
a production of Freiwild was given in the Irving Place Theater
in New York City. Truc, it was given in German, but the mere
fact that the play was produced at all is an indication that
Schnitzler wasffenized as a capable play-written and that
there must have been some demand for such a play. It is interest-
ing that this production was given only two years and three
months after the firstolomance of the same play in the
Deutsches Theater in Berlin (November 1896). The New York Theater
was well- filled for the firstordermance of Freiwild which

and called the Klayers before the curtain repeatedly at the end
of each act. Herr Strool as Karinski was perhaps a bit too dis-
mal, but yet he carried the role through in a unified manner".
The performance was repeated twice on Saturday, February loth
and again on February 20th. On November 10, 12 and 13, 1900
Das Vermachtnis was given at the same Theater, only two years
